Ar 15

Well, I finally bit the bullet and got a good deal on a NIB S&W M&P15 in .223. No fluff 'n stuff, just the rifle and one 30 round magazine. Since I have bought two more mags. Although it is too late, I was wondering what everyone thought of the choice.

There is nothing wrong that rifle. S&W makes good stuff. Pretty much all mil spec so you can't go wrong there. Pretty much all of their rifles are 5.56 which is good as 5.56 typically has higher pressures then .223. So you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 but you might not be good to shoot a 5.56 in a .223 only rifle. However, I have never heard of anyone having issues.

Is it the Sport, Sport II, other? The first thing you might want to do is change the stock. So it begins!

Sport II. Yeah, I get Cheaper than Dirt catalogs every week and there is an entire section that a person could go broke buying accessories for an AR. I'll take it to the range when we return from Denver and see how it shoots. Hmmm. May take it to Denver...........naaa......10 round magazine limit in Colorado.

The hard part will be deciding how you want to use your rifle. Tricked out with night vision for coyote, relatively plain for inexpensive plinking and target shooting or with a scope costing more than the rifle...

10 round magazine limit in Colorado
This is why Magpul, a manufacturer of AR15 accessories, left Colorado. They have some of the best stuff out there.

To my knowledge, it would be leagle to posess a 30 round magazine(s) as long as you do not sell them in Colorado.

Colorado's large capacity magazine ban is silent on non-residents visiting Colorado while in possession of magazines that meet the state's LCM ban criteria, provided the LCMs are for personal use, and the individual had lawfully obtained the LCMs according to the laws of his or her home state

I forgot I have Legal Heat on my phone which updates all 57.....er 50 states gun laws. It says non residents should not transport high capacity magazines through the state as the 10th circuit has not made a ruling on it, and you don't want to be the guinea pig. I forgot, last time, and carried my PT111 with 12+1. Make mental note of neanderthal states.

Nice Mike. I thought you were an anti "assault weapon" guy. Good to know you are part of the "dark side"

*sigh* I guess I will have to show off mine now. Pictures to follow.

Mike, what kind of optics? Hologram? I put one on my 1969 vintage Marlin 336C 30.30. Love it.

I have the Meprolight M21 reflex sight. A tritium holo sight that doesn't need batteries.

When any of my buddies asks about which "entry-level" EBR to get, if they're wanting it for hunting, or any other use that places a higher than normal emphasis on accuracy, I recommend the MP15 without hesitation. At that price point, they're consistently at the upper end of the accuracy scale. I've shot several that would hold 1 MOA ...or very nearly ... shooting GI ammunition.

...Pretty much all of their rifles are 5.56....
I think you're right, Tolyn Ironhand. Unless I'm very much mistaken, S&W is like Colt and Bushy in that everything they build in .223 is chambered in 5.56 NATO, regardless of what might be stamped on the barrel.

Update. Took wifey out to the range so she could practice. I started with the AR at 50 yards so I could make adjustments. Consistent low right by 2". Made a click adjustment and started popping the middle. We were the only ones at the range, and I didn't feel like walking the 100 yards to put up a target, so I picked out some large chunks of spent sporting clays. I set the spotting scope on one and told the wife to look and see where my dust flew. 7 shots and 7 clay remnants hit. I couldn't believe the accuracy with factory iron sights at that range. Shooting Remington XM193's.

With iron sights any gun is consistently more accurate than my eyes. I'm amazed at what snipers, hunters and long distance shooters can do with iron sights. For me optics are a requirement.

I tried out some carry handles and the aftermarket ones are too small for my fat fingers. I would like to have one, but will need to find one that fits like an M16 that you can actually "carry" the weapon with. It felt like picking up a fine china coffee cup with two fingers and your pinky sticking out

I wanted to keep the one with the detachable carry handle as M4-ish as I could. Realistically, I am not a fan of peep sights, mostly because I have not used them very much, I would much rather have a standard V rear site like what is on most "consumer" firearm iron sights.
