Laying A brick surround on a metal fireplace.

Hi, I have a metal fireplace, with no surround. I was planning on laying a classic brick fireplace surround and hearth on the face of it, but I am having trouble finding any information about doing this, if it's possible, how to do it, etc.

My question is if its even possible, or should it not be done for whatever reason unknown to me

Welcome to the forums!

If I understand correctly, the brick gets laid on each side of the fire box with a steel lintel to support the brick over the box. The biggest concern would be supporting the weight.

It would be sitting directly on concrete foundation. I guess I was mostly worried that just building it as simple as it sounds was too easy. Do I have to use some sort of special fire brick? Or because its on the exterior can it be plain clay brick? Thanks for your reply.

Fire brick is only needed in the firebox. Regular brick is fine for the mantel.
