Insulation around fireplace Insert

Need to replace the insulation around the fireplace insert - between the stone and the unit - seems to be at least 2 inches wide in some places.

Everything I have found is 1.5" wide in a 10 foot roll self-adhesive strip.

Would it be ok to leave the existing insulation in, seems to be more in chunks rather than a roll, and go over that with the rolled kind?

I just want to make it look cleaner on the sides.

This is the kind I have found online:

My insert has a trim around it so it doesn't need any additional visible insulation.

I don't see why you couldn't leave the old insulation in place and add more if the old stuff is ok.

I've cut strips from regular household fiberglass batts. Just make sure you remove the paper. If you need something to hold it in place while you slide the insert in place double sided tape works.

Ok, thanks to both of you. This is field stone so there are very irregular "gaps" to fill in. The old insulation is still clean toward the stone just has turned black on the outside.
Maybe one roll of the self-adhesive kind will fill it in a little better yet. I need about 9 and a half feet to go around it.
