See Chapter 5 - Floors

Specifically R502.1.2 and R502.4.

Brant gave good references for that, HOWEVER, if you are south of Hattiesburg, say in Gulfport, Biloxi, etc, most of your ground is black sand and will require additional footing measures if that hasn't been taken care of.

Thanks for the reference info. I live 50 miles west of Gulfport so we have red dirt clay

Ok ,not really understanding the codes.can I place cinder blocks filled with concrete, rebar and anchored to the floor joists around the outside band every 4 ft as well as some under the floor on 4'ft ? my addition is 10x20.
Is there a easier, cheaper and legal way to support the addition? Examplen the front porch I built we supported it with cinder blocks with treated 4x4 on top of them

What does your local permit office require? Don't forget whether you have a continuous foundation or pier construction - it all has to have a concrete footer! Between the extra materials and furniture a living space weighs more and exerts more pressure on the foundation than a porch.

The lady at my local permit office dosent have a clue.the only thing she told me is they go by the 2006 version of the IBC. I live in south Mississippi and everything sits on blocks around here. We don't dig much of a foundation for anything,we don't have basements we have crawl spaces.but I want to be legal and am confused on what the code says,There isn't much details on blocking or piers or whatever they call it.Thanks everyone for the help.

What ever the block/piers sets on needs a concrete footer. The footer spreads the load so the foundation [and house] won't sink. You might try and connect with the inspector to find out what he expects to see.
