Question Vaulted ceiling remodel: ceiling joist span

Hi,

I am removing the ceiling and want to vault it. The house is an A frame with 2x6 on 16" centers at about a 5/12 pitch. It currently has support 2x4 pieces running up from the existing ceiling to support the span between the ridge and the wall. The current span of the 2x6 from ridge to wall is about 14 feet.

Could I span this distance and just add can lights, insulation, and sheetrock to the existing 2x6 roof rafters?

The room is 28' x 34' that I want to vault.

A ridge beam is fine, but I am trying to avoid having to run a beam (exposed i beam if i have to) the entire 34' run halfway down the ceiling on each side between the ridge and wall.

I tried to explain this the best I could, let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forums! From what I read, you want to remove the ceiling joists. They are there for a purpose other than just holding your sheetrock, so I would call in a structural engineer to give blessings before you tear into this. We can't see what you see, so any advice from us would be inadequate.

The ceiling joists might look something like this:

An engineer would have to get involved to remove anything involved in a situation like this. I would doubt your roof could be rafters alone.
