What is covering my floorboards?

Hi,
I have lifted my carpet to find the floorboards covered in something.
I don't know if it's paint or something else.
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what it might be, and if it's anything to be concerned about?

Looks like paint, shouldn't be a big deal. How old is the house? what are your floor covering plans?

Hi, marksr, thanks for your reply.
The house was built just after the war (Second!)
We're not sure whether to put new carpet down or some kind of laminate flooring.
I'm just worried that the paint contains lead or something - and there seems to be three different substances - the thicker, cream-coloured paint, a dark black, tar-like material under the cream paint (it could be old paint) and a yellower paint that seems to be on closer to the middle of the floor (just visible in one of the pictures.

Whether or not there is a possibility of lead based paint depends when the paint was applied. Lead based paints were used post WWII. The main dangers of lead are ingesting the chips or breathing the sanded dust. Shouldn't be an issue if you just install a new floor covering over it.
