Birch Wood Okay for Beam?

I'm replacing some termite damaged wood beams consisting of two 2x10s with 1/2" ply between. I picked up a few 2x10x8s this morning and I believe they are birch wood (they have a red hue to them). Is this an acceptable species for building a laminated beam? I believe the 8 ft boards were the only ones in this species. All the other lengths were lighter in color (SPF presumably).
