Beam Fabrication
I'm making a beam that will rest on the foundation wall and support an exterior wall. I already glued (liquid nails) the two 2x10s together with 1/2 ply in between and nailed three 16d nails every 16". Should I nail from both sides? If so, do I do another three per 16"? Kind of seems overkill considering I glue them. That, and the beam will be nailed to the sill below and 1st floor sole plate above.

The last beam I built was with three LVL's. That nailing schedule called for nails to be driven in from both sides.

I think you will be fine nailing from one side. I would nail a tripled 2x from both sides.
If you do want to nail the other side I would nail top and bottom at 32" on center staggered.
It wouldn't hurt.

Yes, the nails are offset/staggered and we are only talking a few nails in the "back".
I think it's overkill if you nail the back at 16" on center, but nails are cheap

Thanks. And is there a specific requirement for how frequently to toe nail into the sill plate? IRC says to use 8d 2-1/2" nails for toe-nailing a rim joist into a sill plate, but doesn't specify the spacing. Best to go with 16"?
