frame for TV mount

I'm planning to mount my 55" flat panel inside an old TV niche. Its too small to set the TV inside so I want to build a frame to span the width of the niche and mount the TV to that frame.
My thought is to build an 18" tall frame from 2x4s with 2 outer sides (green) secured to studs with 2 lag bolts each, sandwiched by the horizontal 2x4s (blue) laid "flat", with 2 joists in the middle 16" apart.
The TV itself is approx 40lbs, and the mount (red) extends up to 10" out from the wall. My drawing isn't to scale, but its a 46" span. Will this hold even when the TV is pulled out? I'm just not confident on 2x4 shear strength or if the two sides each being secured to a single stud is sufficient. I may add a thin piece of painted drywall in front to give it a somewhat finished look. I was thinking of having the frame sit about 8" above the floor of the niche.
The photo is the niche with a small TV currently sitting in it. Plans and Photo of niche
