Is my table laminate or veneer and can I polish or stain it?

Our one year old coffee table has some white spots from water. I've tried removing them with olive oil, furniture citrus oil stuff, an iron (saw on youtube probably bad idea) and haven't had any luck. I've recently picked up stain for another application and wondered if I can just stain the table top. I can't tell what type of fake wood it is. It's very smooth and it bleeds a little when I wipe it down with lysol wipes. I want to say it's laminate, but then I read about melamine and wondered if it could be that.

Anyway, is there anything else to try to remove the white spots? Would you stain it?

While I'm here, I wanted to ask about my other furniture. We just bought a Sauder dresser set. They also seem laminate but I'm not sure. I wanted to know if there is some kind of way to seal them. I just ordered a car detail buffing wheel for my cordless drill so I am wondering if there is a polish/wax I could perhaps use on it with that to protect my new dressers....

Thanks

pics could be helpful

Stain only works on raw wood so unless you intend to strip the existing finish .....
Polish or wax is the only sealer suitable for laminates.
