Question Sealer for kids dining table

Hey guys,
I plan on building a little dining table for my son. I plan on staining the wood and am curious what I should put on top of that. He is not yet 2 years old and is a very messy eater... so the surface will have food on it that he will end up eating. So I need something safe for him.
Any thoughts?

Thanks
Jay

Three coats of polyurethane, lightly scuff sanding and removing sanding dust between coats.

I agree, poly is about the toughest clear finish available to most of us. Oil base poly dries to a harder film than water based does. Assuming you won't be cutting food directly on the table top most any finish will be safe.
