How to put a dado/groove at the end of a handrail?

I'm trying to create a removable handrail similar to this video e.g. at 3:45.

https://youtu.be/J-zg5yXLv-0 Except mine is not at an angle and about 8 feet long so it's a bit difficult than this video shows. Is this still the best option/trick to rout a groove to the end of a handrail? Any suggestion is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hand Rail

You will need to fasten the rail securely to your work table with clamps while routing the ends.

Yes, that seems to be the key but I have a 8 pound router that it will be hard to hold it vertically while routing this groove. In the video, he has a jig that he temporary staple it to the handrail, but the thing is, he has a lighter router so that jig work for him.

Even with a bigger router it should work the same way. just be sure to clamp hand rail to bench as with heaver router it will tend to move more.

A small palm router would be easier to control, which is why he used one. (Laminate trimmer)

I can't imagine that a removable handrail would meet code if the inspector knew that it was not fixed.
