Furniture repair???

Hi, Nubie here. Hope this is the right place to ask this but please move if need be. I've got an old kitchen table (maple I think) that I'm giving to my daughter in law. She wants the top natural and the legs white. Ok, easy enough. Problem is there's a light 4" cut from a circular saw in the top I need to fill in and finish over. I was thinking about filling it with epoxy and saw dust for color. Sand it off and put a coat of clear on. Does that sound Ok? If so, what kind of epoxy is best? Just looking for a reasonable fix. Appreciate any help you can give.

Welcome to the forums!

Most any repair you make to the cut will be visible You plan sounds as good as any although I'd probably get a couple of different color jars of colored putty and intermix it as needed to somewhat match the wood color. You'd varnish/poly on top of it. If you can somewhat match the grain with the different colors the patch won't stick out as much as it would with the entire filled groove being one color.

So I assume the cut is deep enough that it cant be sanded out?

If you have a table saw I would find a similar piece of maple, cut off a slice to match the width of the cut, glue it in using a good waterproof carpenters glue, sand smooth, and refinish.

You will not be able to make the repair invisible but I dont think the sawdust and epoxy will look very good!

Overlap

i agree with mixing the puddles, maybe you guys can help with a solution to my problem. I am restoring a buffet and after pulling off the doors and painting them when I went to install them back in place there is a huge overlap, over an 1/8th of an inch!!. I used the same holes and hinges so I have no explanation or solution of why the doors are now over lapping, can you help??

Paint adds thickness, and water based paint makes the wood swell.
