Broken chest/seat panel

This is a chest that serves as a seat to change boots/shoes.
One of the panels broke on the tongue and groove.
I'm wondering how to solidify it so it doesn't break again.
Pictures attached of the underside supports.

Other will most likely have a better solution. But I would probably glue the tongue and groove back together and then screw a cross piece on the back side as a stiffener to provide extra strength.

How will the pocket screw assist?
The panels on top are only 3/4" thick. Or do you mean to make a cross joist or something underneath?

Pocket screws are for joining 3/4" wood together and make a good strong joint with added wood glue.

Ok. Then I'm confused how to orient this plus I don't have a pocket jig.
The examples I have are of 2 pieces at right angles like a frame using pocket screws to join. In this seat the support wood is below and the plank above. How do I get a jig aligned over that?
Can I also just drive a 1" screw in at an angle?

Here is a page of jigs. Some are less than 40 dollars. I would not be without mine. Built all kitchen cabinets with one.You clamp jig to board and drill holes. No I dough you could drive screws in a angle and make it work.

Which way would be best to orient the pocket screws?
the crack is behind the original screws so am worried it will just split in the exact same place.
I'm screwing from the dark brown wood up into the light brown cedar?
It's two 3/4" pieces so set the jig to 1.5?
