Hard time sanding maple wood

I'm making a table top out of ... hardwood flooring (maple).
Anyway, I cut some boards with table saw and it left burn marks on the edge so I'm trying to sand them out with hand held orbital sander. I've been at it for a while and it's hardly taking any of the marks off.
Using 5" disk 80 grit sandpaper (Gator). Should go with even lower grit or try different sander? I'm not used to sanding hardwoods, only pine so far..

could go down to 60 but maple is like second hardest wood after hickory so just going to have to work at it!

Take a thin slice with your table saw, less than a 1/2 blade thickness and don't pause on your pass through. Burn marks are a real pain to get off.

Thanks guys. I had no idea maple is so hard, lol. No wonder even my table saw struggled with it (blew a breaker twice)
Just tried belt sander, and it's getting there!

Isn't some of it called "hard rock maple"?

Pick up a new blade for your saw. Carbide and one specific for crosscutting it should reduce or eliminate the burn marks. And as pugsl said, leave a little extra so you can clean it up with a second thin pass. Remember, if you are smoking the wood, something is wrong.
