Coffee Table Refinishing

I recently bought a coffee table off of offer up and am hoping to refinish it. I stripped and sanded the top and noticed a discolored area on the the right side. I am not sure if this is some kind of water damage or other stain. Or if this piece is not real wood but pine veneering and I sanded too much down to the MDF. If anyone can provide insight, I would appreciate it. See picture. You will notice the discoloration in the middle along the right side of the table.

Sure looks like you sanded through a veneer.

Iím going to try to remove the entire veneer and see if I can stain the wood thatís under. Hopefully it works out. Itís a very nice table.

The wood under is probably not going to be very good or provide a satisfactory surface. You would be better off putting a new veneer over the existing. It is not hard to do.

There's a reason they put veneer on top of that surface....
