Build vs. buy - closet built-ins

We are planning a major closet overhaul and have the option of a complete DIY - a la https://sawdustgirl.com/category/my-...k-in-progress/ - vs. trying an upcycle of the IKEA PAX system - a la https://erinkestenbaum.com/2018/12/1...custom-closet/. We have a large amount of space and I've used the IKEA closet designer to mock-up what we're thinking. We're looking at 12-13 drawers total, one pull-out tray, and a pull own bag hamper - all in around $1800 for the PAX system, plus additional cost for framing, building it in. I've only priced out drawers and the frames - we're looking at about $110 per frame to DIY with 3/4" plywood and 1/2" backs and $45 to DIY with 1/2" plywood and BLUM drawer hardware -- this is compared to $100 PAX frame and $40 PAX drawer (with hardware).

$ wise it seems close, at least at the early stage of figures. IKEA stuff is handy but it can be annoying to piece together, so I'm not 100% sure if we'd be saving enough time and/or $ for IKEA vs. a complete DIY.

Plan will be a painted finish.

Thoughts?
