I've just purchased a Travertine table, but I'm concerned the top will topple if anyone leans on it. As you can see from the photos below, it's got a narrow base, which is hollow (there's nothing on each end of it either). The top is not attached to the base at all - the top's weight of 70kg holds it in place. There is one small rectangular piece of stone attached to the underneath of the top, which lines up with the interior edge of the base, helping to center the top. I'm extremely worried that the table will topple if someone leans on it when standing up, or if a child leans on it. It could cause some serious damage! I was thinking of filling the center base with sandbags (or something similar), then gluing the top to the base. But I have no idea if this method will work, or what the best way to attach the base to the top is. First a general question - wood is a natural material. Then typically it's coated in polyurethane, varnish, or similar that seals it? Wood care products talk of moisturizing the wood, etc. But it would have to get through that plastic / non porous coating? That doesn't seem to make sense. As I type this, there ARE stains that you can use on wood. And then not use poly or similar? That's the type of product that benefits from wood care products? The poly furniture? Just use glass plus or similar? You are cleaning / caring plastic at that point? But the main question - we have wood furniture we bought for our daughter's bedroom 20+ years ago and moving it to HER house with her husband and baby on the way. It's in good condition I think (we had glass panels made for the dresser and desk tops to protect them). I'd like to give them a good cleaning / treatment while I can get inside & around all the parts. What would you do? What wouldn't you do? Lube the drawer slides with ______? What product would you use on the stained surfaces? Leave it on a long time to soak in? Or just follow directions? Do you put locktite (blue - semi permanent) on the knob threads? and / or on the bolts as you built the bed frame, etc. There's dust built up on the insides - is wiping down the inside / bare wood with a water damp rag OK? There's a couple shallow scratches down to bare wood. Is a matching color wood crayon is the best to cover it? Other ways to cover those? And there's a few white scuffs from vaccuum cleaners? on legs. Anything you do for that? elbow grease and the wood care product? THANKS!
