Replace header on back porch overhang
I have an overhang which spans 28' with four 4x4 posts supporting a header. The overhang is sagging because the previous owner placed the two inner 4x4 posts on top of deck boards instead of on ground level concrete. The configuration of the posts is;
CORNER POST 10' span INNER POST 8' span INNER POST 10' span CORNER POST
I'm replacing the posts with 6 x 6 Cedar and need to know what the best material is to use for a new header.

A double 2x12 should be sufficient. LVL is another choice. However, you are under one misconception which is the post shouldn't set on top of the concrete without a footing under it.

That's LVL. The footing for a 6x6 post should be 12" diameter down to the frost line.
