Why would not everyone get a direct drive garage door opener?
Just wondering, why not everyone woudl get a drive drive garage door opener?
I realize that direct drives are recommended for space constraints and low noise. Also, a bit more expensive over belt.
Are there any drawbacks?

I attached an image of my garage. I am assuming the "rod" is continuous and I can attach the opener on the left. I will be removing cabinet.

It looks like you have room to mount the opener on the side like you mentioned. You would have to run a power outlet where it's going to be located and you probably would have to wire in the remote light so you had light when you opened the door. The other alternative would be to put the existing ceiling light on a motion detector.
Is there a reason you want to go to a direct drive unit?

The kits that I looked at come with a light that is wireless controlled. So I plan to install the light near existing power outlet.
The reason for direct drive. I have a bedroom above garage. So, it woudl need to be belt or direct drive. Direct drive seems superior over belt as it has no exposed moving parts. Still wondering, other than price why not everyone woudl get direct drive.

Sister's hubby installs doors and when he built her another garage he used the direct drive. I was really impressed how smooth and quiet it is, very nice.

BTW. It looks like there is pretty much only one direct drive model out there. At least the shape looks the same to me whether it is Chamberlain or lift master.
Does anyone know who actually makes them?
