Getting rid of firewood

All,

I have so much firewood from cut trees that it would take me forever to get rid of it. I could literally burn this wood and still have more to go.

I don't have space to install a wood burning stove either and I am allergic to trees.

I have had a few people come by and claim that they will take it all, but they come by for one trailer load and never come back.

I dread craigslist (at least around here). I have met so many weirdos off that thing that scope out the house and make me pretty nervous.

If I am going to pay someone to remove this, what might I do a search for?

Firewood removal?

Who does this sort of stuff? I should have paid the guys who cut the trees in the first place.

Thanks

A free firewood sign (lawnmower/pavers,etc) always worked well for me. Heck, back in VA we had people coming around selling it if they saw a chimney.

I agree, a free firewood sign should get action. What type of wood is it? There shouldn't be any problem getting rid of hardwood but pine isn't favored by those who heat with wood.

Freecycle....not so sure that would be any better than Craigslist.

I have a sign up, but people pass right by it. The wood is mostly maple, with a small amount of cedar.

The sign does say weekends only....don't want creepers and opportunists around my house during the week.

Maple burns good, cedar smells nice

You may have to increase your advertising. Whether it be online or putting up notices on bulletin boards. You don't have to include your address in the ad. If someone calls and you don't feel right about them - hang up.

Call some of the places who sell firewood, they may be willing to pick it up. A double win for them as they take the free stuff off of the market and they get to resell it.

Also, contact some of the heating assistance groups as they may know of people who heat with wood but can't afford to buy it. They may also be able to help get it moved.

In front of my house it would be gone as fast as i put it out there.

A side note. I often see roadside bundles of camp firewood. Rules are strict about campers cutting trees so they grab a few bundles to take along. Not sure what your regulations are.

It matters over here. Plenty of nuts on either trying to scope the house out and get "a bit confused" about what they can take when you aren't home.

How would they know where you live, if you didn't post your address or home phone, in the ad? Besides that, I would bet that there are more scammers on CL than Freecycle. If I wanted to find scammers, CL would be the first place that I would look.

You are right about Freecycle having a bit less anonymity. You are correct in that no one would know where I live, but I have seen a pattern so far. 2 guys have come with their trailers based upon recommendations, but have never returned.

Both were pushy about picking up when I was not home (kept trying to sneak it in to the conversation like they always do on almost every matter around here).

If that pattern continues, I'll have 20 potentially different guys with 20 different trailers all trying to get into my residence when I am not home.

I called a local firewood shop here and so far they seem to be willing to take the firewood.

This is why you do a "curb alert". Set out the stuff out on the curb so that no access to your residence is needed. You will not even need to talk to them. Of course do not mention that you may not be home.

I have had many, many dealings with people on craigslist both buying and selling and have never had an issue.

Call the Sanitation Dept for special pickup. They won't burglarize your house.

Sometimes I think the respondents don't even read the initial post. JJ ,made it clear that he (a) was allergic to trees and (b) that he had had the trees cut by others. Being allergic would mean he was not going to gather all the wood and tote it to his property line so any response that suggested such was already invalid. He also stated that he was VERY leery of allowing people that came via Craig's List from entering his property so the Freecycle suggestion was of limited usefulness.

I remember when I had a load of wood to get rid of I DID pack it to the property line because I didn't want anyone to be traipsing around my house. I placed the ad on CL and had at least twenty responses which I tried to respond to but eventually I just removed the ad. I told everyone that I would not "put a hold" on it nor would I take down the ad until it was gone. I got a few nasty responses back, especially after I gave them my address and added not to fight over it. At any rate, it was gone the next day except for a few pieces of scrap that were broken from a fence. Seems that whoever took it wanted only wood that had not been processed in any manner.

I will also state that I have bought a few items via CL (the wood was the only thing I got rid of via CL) and never met any strange people. Most of the time I went to their homes and once to a vacant lot across from a Costco. Never have I been accosted or felt the slightest danger. Maybe I'm just plain lucky.

Then you hire someone to move it. It's not invalid. This thread is becoming invalid.

Can't argue against that point.

With the proper gear moving the wood should not be an issue, allergic or not.

Man, I agreed with the folks here and took some advice then I get called a troll.

Thanks for reading the thread Furd. Craigslist is like Ebay, you get a million different sellers and you will eventually get burned.

No trouble with Craigslist, that is a reflection of the area that you live in.

Not rocket science.

I like how the guy who calls me a troll gets suspended.
