Cleaning dirt: getting rid of dog urine smell.

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong section. I have about a 3' by 20' section of dirt that my dog will do her business in. I pickup the solids with bags and dispose of them but the urine obviously stays and seeps into the dirt.

Is there a product I can use to spray/pour into the dirt - in conjunction with water - to help dissolve the urine and not leaving the dirt patch smelling bad?

I take her on walks and she does her business elsewhere, but sometimes she's gotta go and it's a convenient place for her to go. So this place will continue to serve as such, so I was hoping to find some product that I could use maybe once a month to clean the area.

My wife uses Sweet PDZ in our horse barn to reduce the smell of urine. She says it does a good job. A quick search on Google and you will find it widely available.

Lime will also work and not hurt the soil of the dog, plus it's cheap.

 

Lime was my thought also, my grandfather used to always pour some in the outhouse on a regular basis

 

Do I need to add the lime and then water it into the soil? How long should I let it sit - or do I need to - before letting my dog roam around there?

 

I'd just scatter it over the area and let nature take it's course. As far as I know it won't harm the dog any.

 

Yes. That was our trick when went camping at the cabin. Ashes from the fire and a scoop of lime after every dump.

 

If you're picking up regularly and with that large an area I'm surprised you have any smell residue. My dog uses a stripe of back yard to do his big thing and I only pick up once a week. Never a trace of smell or mess.

 

I think a lot has to do with the soil type. I have mostly slate rock and I also pick up the poop about once a week - never any noticeable odor. Normally I just toss it over the hill but during the growing season I'll take some and deposit it near my garden as a deer deterrent and it seems to have an odor when you walk past it.

My garden also started out as slate rock but 25 yrs of plowing it several times each year have got it where it now resembles dirt

 

Sometimes I'll let the poops at there and them pick them up in a day or so. So maybe 3-4 piles.

I don't know if it's that the soil just isn't very deep there, or the sun bakes it - both poop and urine.
