Prairie weed identification
I have always been perturbed that I have never been able to identify this particular plant... it really doesn't have a "flower" in the usual sense of the word... at least not one that garners your attention for its beauty... the "flower" is covered by leaf petals apparently so is not really very obvious. But in the photo you can see it has dried seed heads.
If any of you love puzzles this one has been hard to solve.

I may just have to submit it to our local extension office for identification.

I have wondered the same thing Larry but in scouring the sage family I came up empty. Right now im leaning toward a variation of phacelia hastata... but leaves are not as hairy or pointed... more elliptical. But this is what it looks very similar to in its flowering stage of life...

Im not even convinced that photo is properly identified because it looks nothing like most other photos of phacelia hastata that are online.
