Pear tree concern

Pear tree concern
I have two pear trees... the one shown has a new pear growth at the base. What should I do with the new growth? The second pic shows the poor condition of the trunk so I'm wondering if I should chop down the damaged tree and let the new growth continue?

Normally with shoots at ground level you cut them all off.
Many fruit trees are grafted. When you see growth from the trunk at ground level it's usually the root stock. If you cut the top part of the tree off a shoot will grow into a new tree. The problem is you don't know what kind of tree. It likely will not be the same pear you had before.
Most fruit trees are short lived. 50 years and most are done. It may be time to look for a couple new trees.
