Testing soil ph

Is there a poor man's way to test soil ph ?

I see all these test kits on sites such as Amazon - but I was wondering if I could use a method similar to my pool test kit. Maybe dig a 4" deep small hole, toss in some distilled water, siphon off a little water and test the ph just as I would pool water ???

Thanks

There isn't much difference between a soil pH test kit and a pool test kit. You can put soil into a container of water. Stir it up. Let the dirt settle. Then test the water. The settling is important to help clear the water so you can see the color when you add the reagent.
