"Fruit cocktail" tree from fastgrowingtrees.com. Ive ordered and planted a total of 5 trees from them over the last 3 years. All have turned out well but this one appears sick. I live in zone 6 (NE Ohio). I assumed spring was finally here so I ordered and planted on a 70 degree sunny day and gave it plenty of water. Ohio said "just kidding" the next 8 days were all rain with 30 degree nights and very little sun. The tree now has dropping and soggy looking leaves that are slowly turning yellow. This is supposed to be a hardy tree for zones 4-9. How can I tell if it's still going through transplant shock, over water or something else? Can it be saved if it's dying? Thanks.
Not much you can really do at this point other than sit back and wait. 30 degree nights are always an issue after some warm spring weather as new buds can freeze, if this were leafed out possibly the same thing.
Hello! I’m getting ready to plant some new shrubs for my front landscaping and I’m looking for some advice on interpreting my soil test’s recommendations. I reached out to my county’s extension service, which is who ran the test, but apparently the master gardener for my county is out of the office the entire month of May and won’t be back till June.
The soil test recommended:
1.5 lbs/100 square feet of 5-10-10
0.5 lbs/100 square feet of 0-46-0
1.25 lbs/100 square feet of Sulfur
I’m familiar with the fertilizer #’s, but I’m questioning how much I can apply at once. Normally the test includes a phrase like apply over 3-4 applications or something. Maybe because I selected that it’s all to plant instead of to maintain?
Would you recommend applying all of the triple super phosphate and sulfur at once? Should it be split up into 2-applications? On their website it does say that if the Sulfur is over 4 lbs/100 square feet, split it in half and apply 6-months apart, but I feel like that’s for over 4 lbs/100 square feet. Does that seem right?
I figured the 5-10-10 should be applied throughout the season to give the shrubs a boost of nitrogen throughout the growing season.
Let me know your thoughts/recommendations please. Thanks!Read More
Planted a row of about 20 Prince/Princess holly's 3 years ago. They're not doing too well. Most are kinda sparse with leaves and the leaves are not that deep green that they're known for. I've used Hollytone twice a year but it hasn't seemed to have any effect. This spring I put down a bed of manure/compost around each one. Maybe not enough nitro??
Any suggestions much appreciatedRead More
