Maintenance tune up of home heating system for winter

I have gas furnace so heating runs on gas. Is hiring a hvac contractor to do maintenance tune up to prepare for the coming winter recommended? I understand that experience and opinions can vary, but I'm thinking the older your heating system the more it would be recommended, but I don't want to pay anywhere from $50 to $150 for it to be a mere sales opportunity for the hvac contractor.

Depends on your abilities and tools you have.
The burners should be pulled and cleaned if they haven’t been cleaned in a while. Gas pressure checked. Blower capacitor checked for proper capacitance. Blower pulled and cleaned if the wheel is dirty. Flame rod cleaned and mA checked.
If it’s an old furnace a combustion analysis should be done to check for heat exchanger problems.

Check with your gas provider first.
Their service crews are more customer oriented and they don't use the bait and switch approach.
