Hanging Heavy Mirror on Plaster Walls
Any suggestions on best type of wall hangers for hanging a heavy mirror (50 lbs) on an old plaster wall? is it better to affix a wood board (1 x 4?) to the wall first and use that to install the hangers?

Do a search for French Cleat. It's wood, such as a 1 x 4 ripped down the middle at 45°. The two boards lock together.
Also, wingits is the strongest anchor I've used (300#). I believe they can only be used if the wall is under 1.5" thick.

50 lbs. isn't very heavy. The secret is that nails driven at a 45° angle hold more weight and won't pull out. Nail 1/4" X 4" piece of plywood, the width of the mirror, to the wall with a number of nails at 45° angle in a number of places. Don't worry about finding studs. Finally use this type hook.
