Splash guard nut sizes?

I had to remove the splash guard on my wife's merc. My metric nut drivers didn't fit [5mm too small, 6mm too big] same with SAE [3/16 too small, 1/4 too big] I used a 1/4" drive 7/32" 6 point socket and while it worked, there was some slop.

Anyone have any idea what size it's supposed to be?

I'd appreciate it if someone could change the tittle for me. I had titled it what size bolt but some how it reverted to a thread title I didn't post this AM about a member who got banned as I was typing the post.

Maybe 5.5mm. I have one of those in a set of 1/4 drive sockets.

Thanks TG on both accounts , I think I'll take one of the bolts to town with me and see if they match up.
Whatever happened to everything being standard sizes

5 mm is bigger than 3/16" and 6 mm is smaller than 1/4" so 7/32" would be a reasonable choice. 5.5 mm is slightly smaller than 7/32" so Tow Guy did advise the next reasonable choice to try.
