Fan runs without thermostat installed

Any ideas why indoor fan behaves this way. Have a Trane single packaged 3 ton heat pump that when the heat/cool switch set to off, the fan randomly cycles on for 40 sec and then off. This happens also when thermostat is not installed. If the switch is set to either heat or cool, the fan turns on and off with the cycles properly. Fan switch is set to Auto.

The control board has a timer in it to circulate the air in the house. I'm sure you could disable it. What's the model number on the unit ?

That appears to be a heat pump packaged unit.

I see the TDR in the parts listing but I don't see the relay in the wiring diagram... strange.

Replacing Heat Pump Thermostat

I am replacing my heat pump thermostat but bought an Orbit Thermostat - I have an E wire and a blue wire that the new thermostat can not accommodate - I realized after the fact I have a heat pump thermostat. If I leave the E wire off will it hurt anything? or do I need to replace it with a compatible thermostat. My old thermostat was a Bryant Heat Pump Thermostat - the replacement is an Orbitz Clear Comfort Pro - Can I use the Orbitz if it does not have a place for the E wire? The Brant had: C - Blue W2 - White R - Red G - Green O - Orange Y - Yellow E - Black Orbitz G O/B Y W RC R

Background: I have a trane XL16i heatpump, TAM7 air handler and comfortlink xl950 II for my upstairs. The thermostat has been on the fritz for years now; drives up my cooling costs mainly. I want to replace the thermostat but multiple techs have given conflicting advice. I know the comfortlink is for communicating systems, but to my knowledge, neither the HP nor AH are communicating... that's why there is a relay installed. Can't I just remove the relay so i can use a cheaper, less complicated thermostat? Also, the heatpump keeps popping the 30amp breaker... the board is fine, i've replaced the breaker three times and it only pops when in cooling mode. thanks!
