5.1 or 7.1 receiver: 4 speakers in ceiling.

Hello:

We recently moved into our new home and the media room has 4 in ceiling speakers (on all 4 corners). Based on articles I read / images I saw in google I am guessing my set up is suitable for a 5.1 receiver only. I do have a sub woofer and 5 additional speakers from a previous 5.1 set up I had in my old home (I just connected to my TV in the living room with it. My speakers are not even wireless). That receiver died so I am shopping for a new receiver now.

With my current set up, is 5.1 my only option?
If 7.1 set up is possible, can I use the 4 speakers on the celing along with some of my own?

Thanks in advance.

A lot depends on how serious you are about the sound quality. You old speakers likely will not exactly match the tone of the existing speakers but many people will never notice. I say wire it up as 7.1 with your back speakers just sitting out and wires running across the floor as a test to see if you like the sound. If you like it then I'd go to the trouble of permanently running and hiding the wires and installing the speakers.

Depending on the location of the ceiling speakers, and as long as you're shopping for a new receiver anyway, you might be able to set up a 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 system for Dolby Atmos, Auro, and/or DTS:X.

If I were you I wouldn't mess around and mix and match, I have a Dennon receiver with Anthony Gallo speakers and I love it.

You have a Denon receiver with Anthony Gallo speakers. Isn't that mix and match ?

The best thing to is to try the speakers to see if they work and how they sound.
