Basement I beam

I would like to remove a column I my basement. I have an I beam that 6" tall and 42' long (length of the house) and columns every 11' (3 columns total). I would like to remove the middle column and add an I beam next to the original steel beam to span 22' to pick up the slack for the loss of the column. my question is what size I beam should I use? The home is 1100 square feet ranch style.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Best bet is to hire structural engineer who can be onsite to advise you.

And, you'd be a fool to base your construction on Internet advice for something so important.

Doubling a beams length while keeping it the same height is a real bugger of a problem. The easiest way to make a beam span a longer distance is to make it taller. So, if you want to span 22' the cheapest beam will be taller. Trying to span that same 22' with a beam only 6" could require going to a very heavy (thick wall) beam if it is even possible. It is very possible that the span could be too great for a beam of that height no matter how heavy. Only an Engineer who reviews your site can say for sure.

That was the plan. I was just hoping to get a jump on pricing out the beam. The 6" beam is what I currently have. Ideally a beam 10" or smaller would be great, to put it between the original beam and my ductwork.
