Should I throw away this dehumidifier?

I have a broken santa fe advanced dehumidifier.

A repair facility told me the freon has leaked, and the compressor is broken. Cost of repair is > $700. Since it is 7 years old I don't think it's worth fixing. A new one cost $1400.

Ideally I would get a second opinion but I'm having a hard time finding repair places to repair this item. Most appliance repair shop only repair famous brands stuff (GE, LG, samsung, etc). Also, getting "an opinion" cost $80 -- the diagnostic fee for a compression test.

Is it common for freon to leak, and the compressor to go bad at the same time? Is there a DIY method to verify the compressor is indeed bad? I know the compressor draws 5A and runs. I just don't know if it compresses.

Unless I can get it fixed for $400 or less; otherwise I will take it apart and recycle the metal parts.

It is a pity, since it still looks pretty new inside. But what else can I do?

 

Santa Fe is a US operation. Try contacting them for repair advice and recommended service providers. Alternatively you could try your local installer or distributor.

 

Already did. That's how I found the repair place that I would otherwise not looked for (it's a cleaning supplies dealer called jondon). There is no local distributor; I bought mine online.

 

The refrigerant leaked out...... probably thru the evaporator (cold coil). I'll guarantee you your compressor is fine unless it was left running like that for weeks. No one wants to work on those evap coils when they leak. That's why the high cost.

Any appliance place can fix it if they get involved in leaks like that and work with R-22 refrigerant.
