How to dispose of dead rats

I am having a problem with outside rats and hired a company to set up rodent bait stations.

Now I have a dead rat by the fence. With hundreds of flies buzzing around, smells terrible.

What is the proper way to dispose of it?

Is it OK to just spray some bleach or bug sprays over the dead body to drive away the flies, then put on latex gloves and pick it up and put it into a trash bag? Or are there special precautions?

I would just put it in a bag, seal it up tight, and toss it in the trash.

That is if you can find your trash can. You doing OK in your neck of the woods?

yes Tolyn, Matthew deviated a bit and we dodged a bullet in Miami, hardly even a tropical storm. It's doing some damages in GA and possibly SC though.

Seal the carcass up in a plastic bag or dig a hole and bury it.

Good to hear you dodged the storm

If you bury it I would skip the plastic bag. That way the carcass will decompose naturally.

You know how people pick up dog poop with a plastic bag? There you go. Shovel works too. Keeps your nose farther away.

The reason I asked is not because of the Yuck factor. I seem to remember somewhere that recently dead bodies in the middle of decomposition can be dangerous to handle, something about stirring up some nasty chemicals?

Or was I watching too many cursed Egyptian mummy movies?

I don't know about the danger factor but the longer they sit the nastier they get If it was me, I'd dig a hole, scoop up the dead critter with a shovel and bury it. That way you don't need to get all that close to it. If I was dead set on the trash can I'd want to bag them asap.

Bury that thing in place. Don’t treat it with anything as you want it to decompose quickly. Underground is ideal.
