tiny bug ID

I was doing some work behind the barn this afternoon and had a box of nails setting on a block wall. When I went back for more nails the outside of the box and surrounding area was covered with little red bugs. They looked like spiders but scurried around like ants. I've never seen a spider that small, about the size of a dull pencil point and bright red. Curious as to what they are. .. sorry no pics.

Probably were spiders that just hatched. A magnifying glass would help you count the legs.

Do they typically hatch out that many? there were dozens of them. I couldn't count the legs but they seemed to have quite a few and spider was my first thought.

There can be hundreds hatched at one time, depending on species.

I googled clover mites and that is a distinct possibility.
