Insulating attic: chimney surprise
Hello,
I got started today on my project to insulate the attic. I got some old insulation out and made this discovery in the process: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb_RZ-eEaxA
How do I proceed with this? Only one side of the chimney is like that.

The other sides all look like this:

What would be the proper way to prep and insulate the chimney?
Thank for any advice and ideas,
Pete

Can't tell anything from the video but a chimney is supposed to have something like a 2" clearance to combustibles everywhere. Where there are large gaps those spaces need to be covered with metal flashing and sealed with a fire rated caulking.
If you have areas where the bricks are in contact with the framing you should have the chimney inspected and make the appropriate changes.

I posted a picture from your video. Oriented correctly it's easier to see.
My question is where is the ceiling in front of the chimney ?
Is that some kind of buildout.. like a fireplace ?

Thanks for all the good advice so far.
Let me describe what I thought was clear from the video and picture.
Three sides of the chimney have the framing about two inches from the chimney itself. The 4th side has the same framing but a giant hole where you can see down the side of the chimney. Unlike the other sides where there is drywall, this 4th side has nothing at all.
Part of what I have learned here at this site is BEFORE you lay down your insulation, make sure the attic floor is sealed.
So my question would be how to properly insulate around a chimney in the attic, and in my case what to do about the giant hole on the 4th side.
Thanks again.

The other sides of the walls in the hole are a half bathroom and the living room.
My plan is to put flashing between any framing and the chimney. Then use some Fireblock foam/caulk to seal. Thanks to Bud for this bit of advice.
As far as the hole goes I was thinking of using some tapping in some foam board and then sealing with some foam insulate.
Again my thanks,
Pete
