what to put under stepping stones

so I'm installing stepping stones (live in western MA). Have read use stone dust under on some sites, and pea gravel on others. Which should I use?

heres a picture of the path where the stepping stones are just laying on the grass so i could visualize them. Name: walkway.jpg

I'm planning on having them look pretty much like that, but flush with the ground or close to it.

what is recommended?

For individual stones like that, I've been known just to throw them on the ground and be done with them. They sink in a bit as the grass underneath dies and decays and if they sink too much, then I worry about putting a real base beneath them.

Yea, for individual flat stones with grass between I'd just cut out the sod and set the stones right on the dirt. You can use dirt, sand or stone dust for minor leveling. If you were doing a more solid walkway I'd consider a proper base and sand or stone dust layer.
