What weed killing fertilizers would you recommend, how often, and when?

In my old home, I'v subscribed to a service that would come to my house and spread weed killing fertilizers of some sort. I forgot how many times a year. It was working nicely. I do not see any weeds especially dandelions. My question is, can I just purchase some weed killing fertilizers and do that myself on my lawn? If so, what brand would you recommend, how often, and when should I fertilize my lawn? I don't think the service I've subscribed have any special ingredients in their fertilizers that store don't carry it.

Yes, you can take over your lawn care. Check with your local or state agricultural extension office for recommended practices in your area.

Generally weed-n-feed products are a compromise for convenience. Fertilizer and weed controlling herbicide are usually best applied at different times. Going with separate products allows you to apply each at the proper time for better affect. Or, you can use a combination weed-n-feed product so you have less applications.

Nobody uses "special" ingredients. They are all regulated and anything approved form home lawns is generally available to everyone without a license or permits.

Yes, that's what I was thinking too. Okay, so what are some common or best result weed controlling herbicide that most people use? Should I start the weed controlling like early April, June, August, and October and the fertilizers two weeks after the weed controller herbicide has been applied?

I just found this article. I'll go through it later. It sounds like some good suggestions in this article.

There is no simple one "this is best" answer. What is best depends on what you want to do, your budget and how much labor/work you want to invest.

How large is your lawn? What tools do you have for spreading/applying chemicals?

The article you linked is heavy with advertising and big brand names. That makes me suspicious of their intentions/advertising. Start with something impartial like your states Agricultural Extension office and universities. Here is one general article from the University of Wisconsin.
