sprinkler system

I Have a zone not working on my sprinkler system. Looking at the valve assembly and the solenoid, there is another part wired there that looks like a solenoid too but is not attached directly to the valve assembly. Not sure what exactly it is and if thats my problem vs the actual solenoid. can you tell me what it is and its purpose?

Looks like 2 solenoids but picture is not very good, To much junk in way to see what is there. Clean area around valves and step back a little so we can see what you have.

sprinkler system

this picture shows the same set up at a different valve which is easier to see. On this one the item in question has red and white wiring where the one I originally sent only has white wires.

That looks like some type of waterproof splice enclosure.

Typically a multiconductor cable is used from the controller to the valves so you may see several different colors.
