Techniques for removing stumps and shrubs.
Hello,
I am looking for some input from everyone about yard work I am going to attempt.
The first items I am trying to remove are circled.
Tools I have:
-Chainsaw
-Axes
-Saw
-Fire
-Truck/chain
I can rent tools also.
Thanks

The shrubs should be fairly easy to pull out of the ground but stumps can be stubborn. Some will pull out but often about all you can do is cut them off low and either live with it or have a stump grinder come in.

Eventually I would like to cut into this hill and get a retaining wall up, so I will need to get those stumps out fully. The big one is rotted, so I was thinking about just chipping away at it.

You can dig around the stump exposing the roots. Then cut off the roots. It's a lot of sweating and shoveling but it does work. Cutting roots down in the dirt is best done with an ax as dirt and rocks quickly dull a chainsaw chain.
Another option is to plan out what you want to do and rent a machine. If you rent a track hoe or skid steer you could use it to pull the shrub, remove the stump and dig out the area for your new retaining wall.

Wrap a chain around the base of the small shrubs and pull out with truck. Two wraps will help keep the chain from slipping off.
Rent an excavator to dig out the large stump.
If you build on the site, the foundation footings need to sit on undisturbed soil.

Cut the stump down as much as possible, get more wood and build a big hot fire, it looks pretty rotted it will burn very good as the coals get going!
