replace yard of weeds with lawn

I have a yard that has been without a lawn for a few years. I live in Southern California so in the summer, most of the greenery dies off only to return with the winter rain season. I plan to put a sod lawn in but would like to take the best approach to deal with the existing weeds. I am concerned that laying sod without properly address the existing weeds will result in the weeds coming through the sod. I would be grateful for any advice.

Just use a roundup based herbicide and knock them down, give it a good week and you can lay your new sod!

Nuke your yard with herbicide. Anything with glyphosate will work. It's the active ingredient in many RoundUp products and it's available less expensively in generic form. Note that you an irrigation system will almost be required for your new sod lawn.
