Is old fertilizer still good?

I have 2 open bags of Scotts fertilizer and a sealed box of tree or shrub fertilizer spikes. They must be 20 if not 30 years old. Still usable?

Fertilizers are composed of nutrients, the most common being nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K). Each are elements that can't break-down further. So, most fertilizers should be potent for many years.

Having said that, some fertilizers have organic matter and are more like mulch. These fertilizers can loose some potency over time.

I have heard that the nitrogen dissipates when exposed to air.
