Rope tape light hybrid with dimmer

I am wondering if a dimmer can be installed with the rope tape hybrid lighting I have. The box says can be used with any standard inandescent dimmer, however the end of the top plugs into an outlet controlled by a switch. The dimmer O have is an incandescent dimmer but it says for permanent incandescent fixtures only. Can the switch be swapped with this dimmer to control the outlet that the rope lighting is run from? No other items can be plugged into this outlet...it is strictly for the rope that runs around the perimeter of the room behind the crown molding.

Your tape lights are using a transformer or a power convertor. Usually that would require a dimmer rated for LED/CFL applications.

It says "for permanent fixtures only" so some goof doesn't plug a vacuum cleaner into the outlet and blow the dimmer.

You could get an electrical box and insert it into the cord for the tape light (before the transformer) and put the dimmer there.

Or you could get a special outlet unlike the others in the house (e.g. twist lock) and put a special plug to match it on the tape light cord. Then only that one plug would fit the socket.

Another thought, if the tape light itself is to be permanent, is to remove the outlet and make the connection to the cord inside the electrical box, with a suitable box cover change.

Note that hot patching the transformer by plugging it in while the dimmer is on could blow the dimmer.

They make dimmer receptacles that reject standard plugs but you also have to change the plug on the device. Examples: Lutron NTR-15-HDTR-WH - Buy Now | Westway Electric Supply
