How to wire a ceiling fan and light dimmer.

I would like to wire a ceiling fan and lights that dim controlled by two separate light switches. The wire coming from the ceiling is one black, one white, one ground, and one red. Currently the light and fan is being controlled by one switch. In order for the light to come on I have to pull the chain on the fan. This is located in the living room and the only room with this wiring setup. I have installed lights and fans in the other rooms but they did not have wiring such as this. The house was built in 1994 if that helps.Name: Box2-780x1040.jpg

I can take a good guess but to be sure how many 2-conductor (black, white)and how many 3-conductor (black, red, white) cables at the fan? How are they connected?

From the fan: one white, one black, one blue, one green.
From the ceiling: one white, one black, one red, one copper

Current connection fixture to ceiling wire: white to white, black to black, red to blue, ground to ground.

Current connection at the junction box: Only have the two black wires and ground connected to one light switch. That one switch currently controls both light and fan. The red and white are capped not connected to anything. I could not seem to figure out the proper wiring for two separate switches.

At the switch box:
  • Connect the black of power in to one side of both the fan switch and light dimmer.
  • Connect red of the 3-conductor cable to the other side of the dimmer.
  • Connect the black of the 3-conductor cable to the other side of the (fan) switch.
  • Connect all whites to each other.
  • Connect grounds per code.

At the ceiling connect:
  • Black to black.
  • Red to blue.
  • White to white.
  • Connect grounds per code.
