This says I have a photo attached but not sure. In any case this thing is on a cable that suspends a fluorescent light from the ceiling. It slides easily up the cable, sort of a ratchet effect, but will not come down. I need to know how to release it to lower the fixture.

I'm guessing either the stub on top presses in to release, or you unscrew the top from the knurled part.

we need picture showing the full light and how it is attached to the ceiling. Also where that cable attaches to the light.

I would agree, try squeezing the top piece into the base and see if that releases it.

I tried unscrewing the knurled cylinder from the top piece, grabbing each with pliers--no luck. I also tried rotating the entire assembly while holding the cable to see if it would release, again nothing. The top piece has a screwdriver type slot (not visible in photo) which you can't get a screwdriver in due to the cable emerging thru it. I wonder if this came with a tiny spanner wrench that would fit the slot. At 72 I've seen a lot of things, but never this.

Try pushing just the small tube sticking out on top down. That is how newer plumbing fittings release.

Close thread

I finally got back to this today and right you are Pugsl. Depressing that little knob with fingernail releases it from the cable. Many thanks.
