Useing screws rather than nails to attach metal ceiling fixture box

Is it ok to use screws rather than nails to attach a ceiling electrical box directly to a stud for a light fixture? The metal octagonal box i'm using was previously nailed to the stud through the back with two nails, but am hoping I can simply use screws to reattach the box to the ceiling stud.

Screws are preferred and probably required. How the heck did they drive nails in the back of the box? Through ears, yes, but through the back? Must have used a brick hammer.
