how to fix/replace this light?
Hi folks,
I have 3 small light fixtures in my condo that look like this:

A few days ago, the transformer inside one blew and I thought it was a good time to put in some new, smaller fixtures. I'm completely new to this, so you can imagine my surprise when I'm at home depot and they tell me that this is a very non-standard set up and that new lights won't fit into the old wells.
The well in the ceiling is 3-4" in diameter, but feels as though it was custom installed for this light figure.
. As you can see, the well has an octagonal shape.

Into that hole there is a metal bracket that attaches, under which the hollow part of the white fixture attaches. The white fixture holds the transformer. Here's an image of the deconstructed light:

I have a few questions, but any help you can provide would be appreciated:
- Are there other light fixtures that I can buy that would fit into the existing well?
- Is there a name for the sort of light fixture that was installed? If I knew what it was called I might try finding a matching replacement for the old fixture.
- I'd rather install new fixtures with lower profiles, but would this require putting in new wells?
thanks folks!

Welcome to the forums.
You should put Canada in your bio location.
That is a standard 4" round box used for lighting fixtures.
You can mount just about any ceiling light fixture on that box.

Thanks @PJmax! Learned something today!
After doing some googling, it looks like this light box will work with most hanging lighting (ie. pendants, etc.), but does anyone know if recessed lighting would fit?

You would have to remove the 4" round electrical box in order to install recessed lighting in it's place. I see a lot of wiring in that box.... that might be an involved DIY job.
