Wiring for outdoor string lights

Hi all,

wife wants these outdoor string lights run along edge of back patio roof. Near to this is an outside light (with interior switch) and an outdoor plug. I'm trying to figure out a permanent solution for these lights.

My thoughts are to see if I can tap into the light switch for convenient on/off control, or to use the outdoor outlet and create a semi-permanent wiring situation with an on/off switch in line.

Any advice is appreciated! I'm always a little wary of outdoor electricity and/or messing with the outside walls of the house. Better to check 3 times before doing something once that can't be undone!

You can only tap at the switch if there is a neutral. If the wires on the switch are black and white there is no neutral.

Easiest may be to put an outdoor switch in the same studbay as the outdoor receptacle and use the new switch to control the receptacle.
