Outdoor lighting install question
I just moved into a new house this past summer and wanted to change the light fixture above the porch. When I removed the existing fixture, I found no junction box had been installed. The house has vinyl siding and there is a mounting box the fixture is attached to, but the wiring just comes through a hole in the exterior wall and was tucked between the siding and the wall. My question is, do I need to install a junction box for the new fixture or is it ok as it is?

That bracket is called a fixture bar and it gets mounted to an electrical box. It's used to change the orientation of the mounting screws to match the fixture. It's not a standalone piece as used in your case.
Those plastic blocks come with standard size box cutouts. That looks like it was an un-cut or blank one. You could use a surface box or cut-in based on type of fixture.
