need to shorten pendant lights

I have a pendant light in my kitchen that needs to be shortened by about 12 inches. What is the easiest way to go about doing this? Do I have to cut cables to shorten? If so, is it easier to cut from the bottom or top? Thanks

Usually the cable is shortened from the top but judging from the photo it could be top or bottom. Do you know the manufacturer of your fixture? If so you can search online for the installation instructions which should say how to shorten the cables. If you can't find instructions I would take a careful look before cutting any cables to make sure you can put it back together.

You likely need to shorten them at the top. The cable is what is carrying the power to the light bulb and there might not be 2 wires. Lights like that often have a braid on the outside and a wire on the inside. These are the two current carrying conductors.

I was able to shorten them by pulling them back up through the cover at the top. Once I unscrewed it, it was pretty obvious.

Good to hear! You were lucky. I have had to shorten cable lights by 8' or more. That would be tough to coil up in a light fixture!
